About the Community Action Center

CACWho we are .... Community Action Center (CAC) was founded in 1987, by ten area congregations seeking to establish an independent agency which could respond to requests for emergency assistance from neighbors in need. Today, CAC has 26 sponsoring congregations of many faiths and strong relationships with area schools, organizations, businesses and individuals. CAC provides temporary, emergency assistance to residents of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody in zip codes 30327, 30328, 30338, 30342, 30346, and 30350.

CAC's mission
… Every community has members who are unable to meet critical basic needs such as food and shelter. The reasons vary but are frequently linked to health status and work status. Community Action Center was founded to address these unmet needs, with a mission to bring together community resources to provide compassionate, temporary assistance to persons in need to prevent homelessness, allieviate hunger and promote self-sufficiency in the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody area.

How we do it
... The agency works to meet the basic human needs of food, shelter and clothing. Our goal is to prevent homelessness while helping to reduce poverty and build strong independent families and a better community. Assistance may be financial (i.e. rent, utilities or medicine) or in kind (i.e. food, clothing, school and household supplies). The agency also has educational programs to help clients obtain additional skills needed to sustain career and personal success and equip themselves with the tools necessary to achieve greater economic security.

Helping our neighbors .... In 2008 Community Action Center, experienced a 40% growth in demand for services between the first and fourth quarter, and the number is continuing to grow this year. Our clients are requesting assistance primarily with food, clothing, and rent and utility payments. They come with many questions concerning how to access additional help to resolve their problems. Everyone is experiencing financial loss, but for those who had little to begin with that loss puts them in danger of becoming homeless.

This year in an average month the agency feeds 350-400 families and keeps 50-80 families from losing their homes by providing temporary financial assistance to those who qualify.
